Bozo The Clown – 8 Tips For Professional Quality Face Painting

If you are a Bozo the Clown fan you know that kids of all ages love to have their faces painted (especially the younger ones!), so it’s the perfect thing to learn how to do if you have young kids… or you’re planning to have a birthday party for your children.

With this in mind, I’ve prepared a few tips for people just starting out in face painting. Here they are:

1) If you’re painting a design that needs a large area to be covered with paint, use a sponge instead of a brush. Why? Because applying the paint with a sponge means it will dry quicker. It’s a good idea to have a few sponges set aside if you need to use different colors, because this means you won’t have to try and clean the sponge for each color…which would take time.

2) Always let the first color dry before you start painting on a second! If you forget to wait for it to dry, they colors will most likely mix and you’re going to have to start from scratch again.

3) Make sure you know what you want the finished face to look like. Don’t mak it up as you go along. You need to be able to paint faces rather quickly, as if you have children, you already know that kids aren’t always very patient…and they may get bored or restless if you’re thinking on what to paint next.

4) If you’re not good at painting freehand yet, don’t be afraid to use a stencil. You can get stencils of stars, hearts, flowers, and all sorts of things. These are perfect for stencilling onto a cheek. You’ll need stencils of different sizes to accommodate different face sizes.

5) If you want something faster than stencilling, why not try temporary tattoos? Make sure the person’s skin doesn’t react badly to it first, by asking them (or their parents)…or testing it on a small area first.

6) If you have a line of kids ready to have their faces painted, ask them to be thinking about what they would like a few minutes before its actually their turn. You don’t want to be delayed while each kid thinks of what he or she would like painted on their face.

7) Remember to have a mirror with you at all times so you can show the person what you have painted, and to make sure they’re happy with your work.

icon cool Bozo The Clown 8 Tips For Professional Quality Face Painting Professional face paint and stage makeup can be quite expensive, especially if you’re planning to paint a lot of faces. You can make your own simple face paint with cheaper ingredients. A quick search on Google will find you plenty of ideas that you can use to make your own face paint with. Bear in mind this won’t be as good as the professional face paint, so if you can afford it… I would advice you to get the professional stuff.

They you go, that’s my 8 tips a for professional face painting! I hope you found them useful.

History Of Bozo The Clown

Here is a great back story on Bozo the clown. I hope you enjoy it.

Who doesn’t remember Bozo the clown? Covering a span of 55 years almost anyone you ask has some memory of this beloved character. His winged, bright red hair and classic smile still warms the heart of many.

Bozo was originally created as a story book character in 1946 by Alan Livingston. Starring in the first ever read along book, in which a record was included so children could listen to and read the story at the same time, the character of Bozo took off selling millions of copies.

The original voice of Bozo in the record was Pinto Colvig. Along with Bozo, Pinto has been the voice of many other classic characters such as Disney’s Goofy, Sleepy and Grumpy from Snow White and he was even the voice of a munchkin in The Wizard of Oz. In 1949 Pinto starred in the very first televised Bozo appearance. The story book character was finally brought to life with the signature red, white and blue costume, funny red hair (although not as extravegant as later developed) and white face makeup.

To help the show’s success, other Bozo’s were hired to do local promotions. The most noted, and probably the single most important person responsible for the worldwide notoriety of Bozo, Larry Harmon was among the list. In 1956 Larry bought the licensing rights to the character and helped form the signature look of Bozo, including the now famous wing tipped hair that we all know and love.

Larry was responsible for the widespread popularity of the Bozo show. He enabled the show to be broadcast by local TV stations. Each local station could run their own productions of the show with their own unique Bozo. For all the trivia buffs out there, NBC’s famous weatherman Willard Scott was Washington D.C’s local Bozo. With 200+ actors portraying Bozo and an international spread through countries such as Mexico, Thailand, Greece and Brazil, the phenomenon of Bozo was full blown.

The most popular run of the Bozo show was in Chicago with Bob Bell (1960-1984). Bob Bell had all the tricks including acrobats, orchestra and the famous “Bozo Bucket Bonanza Grand Prize Game” where a child picked from the audience was challenged to toss a ping pong ball in all 6 buckets to received the “Grand Prize”. Who doesn’t remember this game. Every kid in America knew if they had their chance they could sink all 6 buckets!

Bob Bell kicked off the shows popularity and sustained it for 24 years when in 1984 he retired the red hair and costume to Joey D’Auria who played Bozo for the next 17 years. The last Bozo show was aired on July 14, 2001.

Old or young, Bozo the Clown is still the most memorable clown of America.

Wayne owns Seefred.com where you can find all kinds of wonderful Bozo the Clown items like the Bucket Bonanza Grand Prize Game, the Bozo Kazoo, and more.
